Map of user reports in the last 24 hours, not a power company's official outage map. Each report is one visitor to this site saying something is not working, placed by the approximate location of their connection. A coloured state means people there reported problems, not that an outage is confirmed.

Power outage questions

Is there a power outage near me?

Your power company's official outage map is the most reliable answer: it shows the outages the utility knows about, how many customers are affected and the estimated time to restore. This page adds what other people are reporting in the last 24 hours, by state and city, and links to each company's official map.

Is this an official power outage map?

No. We cannot see the power grid. This map shows reports from visitors to this site who say their power is out. A report means someone has no power, not that the utility has confirmed an outage. For confirmed outages and restoration times, use your power company's own outage map, linked next to each company.

How do I report a power outage?

Report it to your power company first, by its outage line, app, text service or website: that is what puts a crew on the job. You can also report it here so others nearby can see they are not alone, but a report on this site does not reach the utility.

What should I do if my power goes out?

Check your breakers or fuses first, and whether your neighbours still have power. If it is only your home, it is probably your own wiring or breaker. If the street is dark, report it to your power company and check its outage map for an estimated restore time. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed and unplug sensitive electronics.

How long do power outages usually last?

Most last from a few minutes to a few hours. Storms, ice, wildfire safety shutoffs and damage to substations or transmission lines can take a day or longer. Your power company's outage map gives the estimated restoration time for your area when it has one.

Why is my power out when the outage map shows nothing?

Utility maps refresh on a schedule, often every few minutes, and only show outages they have detected or that customers have reported. A single home or a blown transformer may not appear until someone reports it, so report it to the utility even if the map is clear.

What is a planned outage or a public safety power shutoff?

A planned outage is maintenance announced in advance. A public safety power shutoff (PSPS) is when a utility turns power off on purpose during high wind and wildfire risk, mostly in western states. Both are announced on the utility's website and outage map, often with text or email alerts to customers.

Can I see power outages for my whole state?

For user reports, yes: the map colours each state by reports in the last 24 hours. For confirmed outages, each utility only maps its own service area, so check the company that serves your address. Some states also publish a statewide outage map through their emergency management office.

Who is my power company?

It is on your electricity bill and on your meter. If you rent, your landlord or building manager can tell you. In areas with retail choice the company that delivers power over the lines, the utility, is the one that handles outages, not the company you buy the electricity from.

How do you know where power outage reports come from?

From the approximate location of the connection that sent each report. We never store an exact address. A city is listed only once at least 5 people there have reported in 24 hours, for privacy.
