What to do if Pinecone is not working

  1. Check the status card at the top of this page. If Pinecone reports an incident, the errors are on their side.
  2. Retry failed requests with exponential backoff (for example 1, 2, 4, 8 seconds, with some random jitter). Short 500, 502, 503 and 529 errors often clear within minutes.
  3. A 429 error means a rate limit or quota, not an outage: check your usage limits and tier, and slow down or batch requests.
  4. A 401 or 403 error usually means the API key is wrong, revoked or out of credit: check the key and your billing page.
  5. Check the model name: retired or renamed models return errors that look like an outage.
  6. Keep a fallback: route to another provider or model while Pinecone is down (see the alternatives below), or use a router that switches automatically.

Pinecone outage questions

Is Pinecone down right now?

The card at the top of this page reads Pinecone's official status page live, and times Pinecone's API from our servers every few minutes. If the official page shows an incident, the problem is on Pinecone's side.

When was Pinecone last down?

The latest Pinecone problem we recorded was on Oct 7, 2026, 21:25 UTC and lasted 29 minutes: [SERVERLESS][GCP][us-central1] Newly created indexes failing to initialize. There was 1 problem in the last 30 days. The full list is on the Pinecone outage history page.

Why does Pinecone return 500, 502 or 503 errors?

These are server-side errors: the request reached Pinecone but it could not answer. They usually come in bursts during incidents or heavy load. Retry with exponential backoff, and check the status above.

What does a 429 error from Pinecone mean?

429 means too many requests: you hit a rate limit or a usage quota. It is not an outage. Slow down, batch requests, or raise your limit in your Pinecone account.
